In continental Europe, a wide variety of Christian movements are
developing house churches and house church networks. For example,
over 150 house churches have emerged in Switzerland, about 40
in Austria, more than 500 in Germany and around 40 in Holland.
Groups from varied denominational backgrounds are developing house
churches, like Koinonia Giovanni Baptista, who have a base in
Northern Italy, or the International Missions board of the Southern
Baptist, who are strongly moving towards home-based churches across
Europe. Peter Wenz, an apostolic leader from Stuttgart, Germany,
has seen a network of house churches grow to around 250 house
churches today, around 6,000 people visit a weekly celebration
in the city.
In the UK as well, many are exploring ways of returning to the
simpler roots of the house church movement of the 60's and 70's.
Decades of prayer for revival are generating in many hearts a
desire to see modern day church planting movements. From the New
Churches to Alpha - simple, organic expressions of church life
are emerging.
"If things continue at their present pace, I will not be
surprised if those numbers will explode the next few years,"
says Wolfgang Simson, author of Houses That Change The World.
