| Organic or Organizational by Harold Behr | ||||||||||||||||
For more details of the ministry of Harold & Wendy go HERE With the boom of Organic farming that's upon us these days we
are having to re-learn basic agricultural techniques that have
been lost and given way to agribusiness mass scale hi tech production
methodologies. Likewise in the new emergent "Simple Church"
we who labor in the field are finding ourselves re-learning how
Christ & the Apostles instructed us to function in our gatherings.
Of course, using NT Models means a lot of different things to
different people groups. Denominations and sects have used this
approach as the basis to remove music & organs, insist on
grape juice and crackers every meeting, and countless other external
extractions from the "code". But we are talking about
understanding God's ways, His purposes, his heart for His Church,
which can only be revealed as we sit in His Presence and let the
Holy Spirit breathe across the pages of Scripture. Fortunately
virtually everything Jesus taught with were organic in nature.
What we are experiencing in SC is an emerging expression of
Church without excessive programming, planning or preparation
on the part of leaders. This "happens" as those who
gather are charged with a "higher bar, as to what it means
to be a Christ follower". coming with 1 Cor, 14:26 written
on their hearts, coming to give, not to get. The Overseer's role,
while important, is not one of doing the ministry, but rather
like a traffic cop is engaged in "directing traffic"
or making space for each one's gift and/or contribution. The focus
is to "be still", and get to know God as he ministers
through each person in diverse ways. How we get there requires fresh new ways in evaluating what
is regarded as "success" in how we 'do" church.
Much of this is written in the hordes of books on the subject
available these days. It also means as leaders it is important
that our lifestyle, reflects, in a seamless fashion, more of an
Organic way of living versus tightly programmed. For instance,
when we start our day do we fill up a "things to do"
list (often from yesterday's failed attempts) and so structure
our day so that God has difficulty in interrupting us and getting
a few minutes here or there to get us to deal with broken people's
needs or perhaps a new direction for us? Or, can we start off
with a blank sheet, each morning, and pray/listen our way through
our devotional communion completing the list as God dictates,
or perhaps even better, complete the list at the end of the day
(recording what God has done through us) as we have made space
for God's intervention and leading throughout the day. Organic
planning is an oxymoron. Organic panic is more normative in the
SC environ (quoting Neil Cole) Perhaps a little more focus upon
today and it's needs/troubles/opportunities, and a little less
on tomorrow is the organic principle found in the Scripture. |
